30 years with Stringo and drag racing

Posted by Stringo - 08 June, 2017

Summer is a very busy time for Tomas “Häggen” Hägg, inofficial Swedish drag racing champion and a Stringo employee for 30 years.

It was on June 1 thirty years ago that Tomas “Häggen” Hägg started work at Stringo, at that time called Famek. He was the company’s fourth employee and he was around when development of the first vehicle movers began. Around the same time, he began drag racing with his ‘69 Chevrolet Corvette. Today, he combines the two activities and enjoys both.

When Tomas first joined the company as a welder, activities generally comprised contract manufacture for the sawmill industry and production of garage doors. A lot has happened since then. Stringo is now a global leader when it comes to vehicle movers, and Tomas can usually be found working in Goods In and Out.

His main interest outside of work – drag racing – has seen him become inofficial Swedish Champion.

Drag racing involves driving a vehicle as fast as possible from start to finish over a distance of exactly 402.33 meters. Two vehicles compete alongside one another. The winner continues on, while the loser is eliminated. Tomas competes in the Super Street class.

“In drag racing the driver and the car are equally responsible for a good result,” explains Tomas. “The driver must have excellent reaction times and plenty of experience and skill, while the car has to be fast, as well as reliable. There’s no room for error.”

Tomas usually takes part in around 8-10 competitions a year, held everywhere from Malmö in the south of Sweden to Piteå in the north.

“I like cars and speed, but the social side of things appeals to me just as much,” says Tomas. “It’s a way of spending time with like-minded people who share the same interests: cars and speed. There’s a lot of traveling involved, particularly during the summer months, and so it’s important to have an understanding employer, which luckily I do.”

Stringo and Tomas are both proud of the fact that the car’s livery features the company name. Here at Stringo we are delighted to be able to support and sponsor Tomas, and we wish him every success in the summer.
